A sure sign of summer !

poppies 001

poppies 002

poppies 003
These are the Oriental poppies that are in full bloom now. The flowers are huge with papery petals and a deep red centre, they are so big that they soon droop under the weight of the flower. The red ones I have haven't grown much this year as they are in a shady part of the garden, later I will get the gardener to move them to a more suitable place
It is another glorious day here but the temperature has soared to the upper 70s so It is too warm to do much more than sit and admire the flowers. I have come in to blog before this room which is west-facing gets warmer as it is 26os at the moment but will rise as the sun gets to the west.
Tomorrow I'm meeting my cousins in Liverpool for lunch and chat which I am looking forward to as we usually only meet twice a year. I am the eldest of seven grandchildren, four girls and three boys. Brian lives in Canada, Gerard moved to London 20 + years ago and we lost touch with him, John the only one who lives locally is a priest who doesn't think he would appreciate our company I don't know what he means ! Ann, a widow, lives in Manchester, Maureen is unmarried and lives on the Wirral but Jean, a divorcee, still lives here in Widnes. Three of us " girls " followed the family tradition and were teachers like our grandmother, aunts and mothers. Only three of the GGC , all girls have kept up the tradition though my GS, Gregory is thinking about joining the " gang " like his granddad
I got a letter the other day from the Teacher's Pension Agency telling me that I have been overpaid for the last few years but they were unable to tell me by how much until AFTER the 30. June ! The letter was an advanced warning notice - actually I found it quite distressing as I don't know by how much my pension will go down. Fortunately I will not have to pay back any of the money they overpaid. There was an article in the Daily Telegraph yesterday saying that over 90,000 civil servants eg. police, teachers, judges etc. will be affected that number includes 32,000 teachers. After the fiasco of the MPs expenses, the loss of many computer discs with containing personal details of thousands of people this is just another example of the ineptitude of our government and their agencies ( many of which are quangoes ) For those who are lucky enough to live without quangoes here is an explanation !
Quango ;-from quasi and autonomous. They are non-governmental organisations that the government has devolved power to but they get money from the government or should I say -tax-payer? I tried to find out how many there are in the UK no joy ! - but it is more than 7,000.
To add to the various problems I've been having lately, this Friday I found that my watch needs a new battery. A mere trivial problem I know but recently I seem to be having more than my fair share of problems big and small.

Oh, I was hoping you would post a picture of those poppies!  They are BEAUTIFUL!  I've always wanted to try them but I don't think we have any areas that get enough sun.

The funny thing about watch batteries, at least over here, si that it is impossible to get anyone to put them in for you unless you go to a jeweler.  Years ago when I worked in retail, I had a nifty gadget to pop off the backs and put in the batteries, but I think too many people complained that their watches were ruined by untrained workers fiddling with the innards, so now they won't do it.  I hate to pay extra just to put a battery in!

Hope you have a great time with the girls tomorrow, the weather looks like its going to be lovely. Its a good job they do not want you to pay the money back, it will be interesting to see how they have come to the decision that they have overpaid you

The whole world is bonkers.  Here we are all going bankrupt...towns, schools, etc.  There is certainly a great problem with our governments.  Enjoy your girls day... Nancy

Enjoy your girl time! It always does me much good to be out with my friends.

That is certainly worrisome about your pension. Our government just recently around the time of the income tax filing deadline sent everyone on Social Security $250 . We are still not sure where the money came from since the government is in heavy debt and the economy is in such perilous times. By today's standards this money is such a small percent of what we had just sent in it remains a puzzle to us unless it is to buy votes maybe.....$250 is still nothing to sneeze at but with the high cost of living it just might pay for one month's utilities.

Things get curiouser and curiouser here,

Beautiful poppies Marie, Ive never seen pink ones as those and this is my first time seeing them here exclusively on your blogsite Isnt that a really nice tradition to keep in a generation for careers Did Julie ever thought of becoming a teacher? Did you have a lovely time with your cousins yesterday? Ok for having overpaid for your pension, fair enough to give you that advance warning for their own mistakes but to have YOU pay back what is owe to them for their own errors is a NO-NO ..why should you? Was it your fault? Who's the incompetent one here? Dimwits I am telling you absolute incompetent dimwits!

Your poppies are lovely.  We always had them in our garden when I was a girl.  My mother called them "tissue paper" poppies.  I used to play with the seeds after the petals died and fell off.  I would pretend they were pepper shakers for my tea parties with my dolls and panda bear.  It was above 90 today!  The weather forecaster said we were getting August weather in June.  Tomorrow it is supposed to be a normal 75.

I've always adored poppies, and yours are so very beautiful! At least you don't have to pay that money back, but it would have been a shock to find out.

Have a wonderful meet-up with your cousins!

Have I asked if you ever watched the BBC program, "Doc Martin "?  I record it at midnite on Monday to watch on Tuesday. I love this show!! I need to look up Port Wen to see if there really is such a village in Wales.
I am sorry to hear about your pension! You don't need to hear that!!  I hope it is not too much that they are subtracting from your pension!! Our government gave each of us Social Security pensioners a credit of $250 this month!! It went directly into my bank account. It will help with my saving for a vacation in Maine this fall. I am planning to stay at a Fransiscan Abbey there. It is so beautiful. I hope my plans are Gods plan's as well! Remember the saying, "If you want to hear God laugh, tell Him your plans!"?

Thanks for your comment on my site. I also hope I have many happy years with my husband. There doesn't seem to be any unusual quirks he has that most men have not had but it is amusing and I can see how it can be a problem in some marriages. My husband worked so hard and took so little time for himself that it is very interesting to me to see what he  is doing while no longer under the stress of earning a living.

Beautiful day here in my little corner of the world. Everything is so green and lush from all the spring rain we've had. I have/had some orange poppies that I've enjoyed for years but I do believe Fritz has been repeatedly mowing them off this year. I shall say nothing about it to him.
